Courses
I have been an adjunct assistant professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the University of Victoria since 2007. I have worked with the Director of the Software Engineering program and two other professors at the ECE department to create "Security Option" within the Bachelor of Software Engineering program.
As part of the Security Option development, I created an information security course for senior students of the University of Victoria and has taught the course annually. The first offering of the course happened in 2008 under the title "Advanced Topics in Information Security" as a joint topics course between the ECE department and the Software Engineering program. From the following year, the course became a permanent calendar item of the Software Engineering program and it was renamed to "Practice of Information Security" with the course identifier SENG 460. In 2013, the course name has been changed again to "Practice of Information Security and Privacy" to demonstrate the privacy emphasis as well as security.
The topic areas in the course are selected from the information security practitioner's viewpoint. Each topic has a significant body of knowledge accumulated in the corporate world. The topic areas include Enterprise Security Architecture, Information Security Policy and International Standards, Security Threat and Risk Assessments, Monitoring, Investigations, Digital Forensics, Media Handling, Asset Disposal, Intellectual Property, Application Security, Ethical Hacking, Physical and Environmental Security, Business Continuity Management, Privacy, and Information Security as a Profession.
The courses offered since 2008 are as follows:
2014 (January-April) SENG 460 Practice of Information Security and Privacy
2013 (January-April) SENG 460 Practice of Information Security and Privacy
